This easy granita recipe from The 52 New Foods Challenge turns any winter citrus into a delicious slushie in a flash. Just three easy steps. No scraping and freezing required!

Granitas (in kid speak: slushies) may be a delicious way to enjoy winter citrus, but they can be a pain to make. If your family is like ours, you don’t have time to scrape, then freeze, scrape, then freeze, to create a granita. So we came up with a quick fix.

We decided to make our granita the easy way, with our food processor. All it takes is three easy steps: squeeze, freeze, pulse. We used Satsuma mandarin oranges, in honor of Chinese New Year, but this recipe works equally well with any winter citrus—grapefruit, cara cara oranges, blood oranges, lemons, and limes.

Easy Satsuma Granita Recipe from The 52 New Foods Challenge

This easy granita recipe was a fun project for my kids and me! It is a simple twist on a favorite winter fruit, and a healthy alternative for dessert (no sugar added!). We tried the recipe two ways: one with clementine and the other with Satsuma. The Satsumas were far superior, both in color and taste, so we’d highly recommend hunting them down for this recipe. It will be well worth your effort!

Ingredients for Easy Satsuma Granita:

8 Satsuma mandarin oranges

Directions for Easy Satsuma Granita:

1. Slice the oranges in half, cutting through the middle of the orange as opposed to top to bottom. Using a simple citrus press, squeeze the juice out of the oranges.
2. Pour the juice into an ice cube tray and place it in the freezer. It can take up to 2 hours for the juice to freeze completely.
3. Once frozen, remove the juice cubes from the tray and load them into a food processor.
4. Pulse until the frozen juice looks like slush.
5. Serve immediately.

Tip: Squeezing is the best part of this recipe for my kids! Set up on a rimmed baking sheet to contain the mess.
